Ugh, I tried this recipe, but it was not good. I’d rate it a one star, just a bit above cardboard. Granted, I did not use Honeyville or nuts.com brand of almond flours suggested, but I did use a premium brand (Blue Diamond finely sifted flour) and even weighed out the ingredients to be certain I followed the recipe precisely. I don’t need paleo, but do need gluten-free. I have other cookie recipes that are great, and if a recipe is not great, I don’t want to waste my time or money on it. Sadly, I will not be making this again.

My past four years have been some of the best of my life, and I’ve learned more, grown more, and evolved more from my experiences since stepping foot on the University of Puget Sound campus in 2011 than I have in any other time in my life. I’m not going to get sappy, because let’s be real, I’m sure the closer I get, the more I’ll write about how crazy it feels to be done with this chapter of my life. 

Delicious – followed the recipe exactly only mine did not go down flat. Perhaps the nut butter was a bit dry? Anyhow, when I checked on the first tray they were still very perky and round so I quickly smooshed them with a fork and they were a bit cracked but held together well and were tasty. For the second batch, pressed them first with a fork and they puffed up nicely leaving classic peanut butter cookie marks. Will definitely make again.

The ricotta cheese will be an issue for those strictly following the no dairy rule, while others may choose to give it a pass because it comes from grass-fed cows. Sorry for just now seeing this! You’re the first person in about 600 reviews to say that they didn’t come out well so something definitely went wrong. Did you maybe pack your almond flour very full? I’d recommend going by weight. If you didn’t, I recommend trying again because every now and then, I accidentally leave an ingredient out of a recipe when baking and don’t realize until later. I know it’s probably not the answer you were looking for but it’s the only thing I can think of if you didn’t make any changes at all to the recipe.
Take 30 days and give it a shot – cut out the grains and dairy, start eating more vegetables and fruits, eat more humanely raised and non-grain fed meat, cut out the liquid calories and sugar, and see how you feel after the month is up. If you’re analytical and want numbers to use in your final verdict, get your blood work done at the beginning and end of the month.

2017 Update: these Paleo Chocolate Chip Cookies are the BOMB, and one of my favorite/your favorite recipes on the site. You guys seriously LOVE this one, and I don’t blame you. They’re so good. These could possibly be my favorite cookie, ever. I love chocolate and peppermint together. They are so easy to make that my daughter makes them all the time. They have to be baked or cooked at all. The hardest part is waiting for them to cool and set in the frig for an hour. The candy canes are just for show because they aren’t Paleo. You can get all the peppermint flavor you need with the peppermint essential oil. If you aren’t 100% strict Paleo, go ahead and add a little bit of peppermint candy; I won’t tell anyone.
Here’s a great game day dip that you can serve up and feel like you’re having a real treat. Use one of the chip recipes on this page to scoop up this flavorful dip. It’s a sure winner when bacon and bleu cheese join spinach and artichokes. It’s like taken a proven success and adding two more delicious ingredients to it. Ghee is a paleo-friendly fat that’s made by heating butter to isolate the butterfat content and remove most of its lactose. Some people debate that because it’s made from dairy (which isn’t considered paleo), ghee isn’t part of a strict paleo diet. However, because removing the milk solids means that ghee is generally well-tolerated by those who don’t digest dairy well, the consensus is that it’s a great fat to include. Because of this, broccoli is a great addition to almost any paleo meal and has also been shown to be particularly beneficial in reducing the risk of developing certain types of cancers due to its anti-inflammatory and detoxifying nature.

Highly versatile and heat-stable, coconut oil is a prized ingredient in the paleo diet due to its high levels of saturated fats. Eliminating processed foods as recommended by both the Paleo diet and clean eating can help you keep your salt intake within the 2,300 milligrams per day recommended for healthy people, as well as limit added sugars as suggested by the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Although sweet potatoes are high in carbohydrates, they’re often the preferred, paleo-friendly tuber option because of they have a low glycemic load and high level of nutrients. These versatile vegetables are high in fiber, potassium, vitamin A, beta carotene and potassium. They’re also a particularly useful energy source for those who are very active and need a higher carbohydrate option to help sustain endurance and fuel quick recovery.

The second my mom saw these, she immediately started making plans to hide and portion them. She has the same problem I do with, ya know, not eating the whole batch. In one sitting. She gushed over them, and asked me, “HOW do you do it??” And I’m like, “HOW do you cook so well?!” My mom thinks it’s the funniest thing in the world that she cooks savory food like a boss, and I pretty much exclusively bake.
Legumes are members of a large family of plants that have a seed or pod. This category includes all beans, peas, lentils, tofu and other soyfoods, and peanuts. Legumes are not allowed on paleo because of their high content of lectins and phytic acid. Similar to grains, this is a point of controversy in the scientific community. In fact, lots of research supports eating legumes as part of a healthy diet because they are low in fat and high in fiber, protein and iron.

These red pepper poppers are great for game day snacking, or anytime you get the notion. They do take a bit of time to make, so maybe not the best choice if you are looking for something fast to make to lessen your hunger pangs. These have meat and vegetables in pretty equal amounts, with bacon wrapped around the peppers and chicken breast acting as the stuffing. They kick it up a notch with some red pepper flakes so these will be spicy, bacony, and loaded with flavor. As paleo guru Robb Wolf puts it, think of a 100-yard football field. The first 99.5 yards are how long Homo-Sapiens spent as hunter-gatherers. As they became REALLY good at hunting and gathering our bodies adapted to that lifestyle over thousands of years. That last half-yard represents our species after the agricultural revolution, where our diet has shifted (but our genetics haven’t).

With grains excluded from the Paleo diet, nuts and seeds are popular replacements in Paleo versions of bread, cereals, pies, cakes and other baked goods. They form the basis of many dairy-free milks, flours and nut butters. They’re also incredibly popular and sustaining snacks and salad toppings. While nuts open up a range of previously non-Paleo offerings, they’re nevertheless high in calories and undesirable phytic acid. Consume them mindfully.

Remember that the point of snacking on Paleo is not a form of escapism or a pig out session, it’s to get you to your next full meal and provide you with energy when you hit a dip. These energy bars have what it takes to propel you forward with a nice mix of fruits, nuts, and seeds you’ll be able to go from depleted to energized just by eating one. They also store up nicely so you can make a batch of them and keep them for the week, allowing yourself one or two a day at strategic times when you start getting hungry and it’s nowhere near mealtime.


This is a classic gingerbread cookie recipe Paleo-style. Yup, you could make these and decorate your tree with them and eat a few too. You could make these and give them away to your friends and neighbors if you do that sort of thing. Whatever you do with them you will have so much fun because you can actually make and eat gingerbread cookies like everyone else now. Yeah, for eating “normal” even when you are on a Paleo diet.
We love nuts and they are decidedly paleo diet friendly. Be careful though, as cashews are high in fat and, for some reason, it’s incredibly easy to eat an entire jar of them in one sitting (that’s not just us, is it?). If you’re trying to lose weight, limit the amount of nuts you’re consuming. Otherwise, have at it. I mean, you can’t beat a good almond/pecan/walnut mix, can you?

With seafood, wild and sustainably caught is always best, as is sourcing your seafood from areas that are less likely to suffer from pollution and heavy metal contamination. Generally speaking, larger predatory fish are more likely to have higher levels of heavy metals than smaller fish and mollusks. It’s not a reason to avoid larger fish entirely, but it’s good to balance intake between larger and smaller fish varieties if you’re concerned about pollution.
